Osprey In Flight

photograph of an Osprey in flight, copyright 2016 by Doug Couvillion

This is the same Osprey I photographed and featured on the blog a few months ago under the title “Osprey Hovering In Flight“.  It was much closer when I took this picture, revealing much more detail.  Please click the image to see a larger version of it.

Common Morpho, I

Photograph of a Common Morpho butterfly resting on a leaf

This Common Morpho was kind enough to sit still while I photographed it head-on.  It’s a large butterfly with brilliant blue on the upperside of its wings and brown with black and yellow eyespots on the undersides.

Red and Blue Damselflies

photograph of a red damselfly and a blue damselfly on a rock in the Rappahannock River in Virginia

The damselflies on the Rappahannock River come in a wide variety of colors.  I thought this red one was particularly colorful.

Rusty Piling In The James River

photograph of a rusted piling in the James River near Richmond, VA

This rusty piling seems out of place among the old wooden posts.

Among The White Giants

photograph of white sycamore trees stretching up into the blue sky

On a bright, warm winter day I found myself in the company of white giants reaching for the deep blue sky.  It was about 60 degrees fahrenheit but the naked sycamores and the hard light reminded me not to get used to the weather.

Anticipating Pelican

photograph of a Brown Pelican standing on a rocky jetty watching a fisherman

This Brown Pelican seems to know sometimes a little patience pays off.  It stood there for a while, quietly waiting to see if the fisherman had any handouts.  Unfortunately it never got that meal.  Two other fisherman arrived and the pelican decided it was time to move along.

Diving Forster’s Tern

photograph of a diving Forster's Tern about to hit the water

During a recent trip to the Florida Gulf Coast I was watching several Forster’s Terns as they hunted above the gulf.  When they spotted a potential catch, they would hover for a second before diving, nearly straight down, into the water.  I took lots of photos of them flying and hovering before I was able to capture this one just before it splashed into the water.

Brown Pelican On Rocks

photograph of a Brown Pelican standing on rocks by the shore

I saw this Brown Pelican standing on some rocks by the shore while I was visiting Bonita Springs, Florida.  The pelican practically posed as I approached with my camera.

Brown Pelicans are a little funny looking but when I’m at the beach I love watching them soar along in the wind.  They frequently glide along, just above the waves, in small groups and seem to have perfected the art of efficient flight.

Pine At The Top Of The Hill

This pine stands alone near the top of a hill, in a meadow at Shenandoah National Park.
